In the fleeting world of dance, it is photographers like Matthias Zölle who accompany the work of choreographers with a vision entirely their own. They immortalize what comes into existence for just a fraction of a second before disappearing again. They maintain what remains only as an echo for the audience, capturing an expressive movement, a small gesture and creating images of extraordinary expressive power.
»Capturing the elements of movement in a photographic instant (with help from the right instant), and so maintaining the expressive power of life in motion, is the photographic and artistic ability of exceptional dance photographers – their magic. It’s also Matthias Zölle’s magic.« Thomas Thorausch, Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln
Using a 24 x 36 mm analog negative film format, Matthias Zölle’s photographs are magnified by a hundred and placed on 2.40 x 3.60 m frames. Temporary exhibition situations emerge in public space drawing the focus to dance as a medium. Reminiscent of a touring exhibition, the images will be displayed at different locations as well as at the Tanzmesse in the courtyard. And, as in dance, the transience of the moment is in focus.
